Transliteration
Wahiduddin Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
70:1
سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ
70:1
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:2
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ
70:2
(a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:3
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ
70:3
a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:4
تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
70:4
by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:5
فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
70:5
So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:6
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا
70:6
Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:7
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا
70:7
while We think that it is near at hand. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:8
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ
70:8
It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:9
وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ
70:9
and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:10
وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
70:10
and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:11
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ
70:11
although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:12
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
70:12
and his spouse and his brother, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:13
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ
70:13
and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:14
وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
70:14
and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:15
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
70:15
By no means! It will be the fierce flame - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:16
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ
70:16
that will strip off the scalp. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:17
تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
70:17
It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:18
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ
70:18
and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:19
۞ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
70:19
Verily man is impatient by nature: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:20
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا
70:20
bewailing when evil befalls him, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:21
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا
70:21
and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:22
إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
70:22
except those that pray, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:23
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ
70:23
and are constant in their Prayer; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:24
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ
70:24
and those in whose wealth there is a known right - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:25
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ
70:25
for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:26
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
70:26
those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:27
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ
70:27
and fear the chastisement of their Lord – - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:28
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ
70:28
surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:29
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ
70:29
and those who guard their private parts, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:30
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ
70:30
except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:31
فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ
70:31
but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:32
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ
70:32
and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ
70:33
and those who are upright in their testimonies; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:34
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
70:34
and who take due care of their Prayer: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:35
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ
70:35
all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:36
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ
70:36
But what is the matter with the unbelievers who are hurrying towards you - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:37
عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
70:37
in crowds, both on the right and on the left? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:38
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ
70:38
Does everyone of them wish to enter the Garden of Bliss? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:39
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ
70:39
By no means! They know that which We have created them from. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:40
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ
70:40
I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We have the power - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:41
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
70:41
to replace them by others who would be better than they; and We shall certainly not be overpowered. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:42
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ
70:42
So leave them to engage in vain talk and to amuse themselves until they come face to face with the Day which they are promised, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:43
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ
70:43
the Day on which they will hastily come forth from their graves, as though they were hurrying on to the altars of their deities. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
70:44
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ
70:44
Their eyes will be downcast and disgrace will overwhelm them. Such is the Day that they were promised. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
