Transliteration
Wahiduddin Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
83:1
وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
83:1
Woe to the stinters who, - A. J. Arberry (English)

ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
83:2
when they measure against the people, take full measure - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:3
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
83:3
but, when they measure for them or weigh for them, do skimp. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:4
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ
83:4
Do those not think that they shall be raised up - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:5
لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
83:5
unto a mighty day - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:6
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
83:6
a day when mankind shall stand before the Lord of all Being? - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:7
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ
83:7
No indeed; the Book of the libertines is in Sijjin; - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:8
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ
83:8
and what shall teach thee what is Sijjin? - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:9
كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
83:9
A book inscribed. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:10
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
83:10
Woe that day unto those who cry it lies, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:11
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
83:11
who cry lies to the Day of Doom; - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:12
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
83:12
and none cries lies to it but every guilty aggressor. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:13
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
83:13
When our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:14
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
83:14
No indeed; but that they were earning has rusted upon their hearts. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:15
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ
83:15
No indeed; but upon that day they shall be veiled from their Lord, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:16
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
83:16
then they shall roast in Hell. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:17
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
83:17
Then it shall be said to them, 'This is that you cried lies to.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:18
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ
83:18
No indeed; the book of the pious is in Illiyun; - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:19
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
83:19
and what shall teach thee what is Illiyun? - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:20
كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
83:20

83:21
يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
83:21
witnessed by those brought nigh. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:22
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
83:22
Surely the pious shall be in bliss, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:23
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
83:23
upon couches gazing; - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:24
تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
83:24
thou knowest in their faces the radiancy of bliss - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:25
يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ
83:25
as they are given to drink of a wine sealed - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:26
خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ
83:26
whose seal is musk -- so after that let the strivers strive -- - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:27
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ
83:27
and whose mixture is Tasnim, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:28
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
83:28
a fountain at which do drink those brought nigh. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:29
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ
83:29
Behold, the sinners were laughing at the believers, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:30
وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
83:30
when them passed them by winking at one another, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:31
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ
83:31
and when they returned to their people they returned blithely, - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:32
وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ
83:32
and when they saw them they said, 'Lo, these men are astray!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:33
وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ
83:33
Yet they were not sent as watchers over them. - A. J. Arberry (English)
83:34
فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
83:34
So today the believers are laughing at the unbelievers, - A. J. Arberry (English)

عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
83:35

هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
83:36
Have the unbelievers been rewarded what they were doing? - A. J. Arberry (English)
