Transliteration
Wahiduddin Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
37:1
وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِ صَفًّا
37:1
By the rangers ranging - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:2
فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجْرًا
37:2
and the scarers scaring - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:3
فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَـٰتِ ذِكْرًا
37:3
and the reciters of a Remembrance, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:4
إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمْ لَوَٰحِدٌ
37:4
surely your God is One, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:5
رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ
37:5
Lord of the heavens and the earth, and of what between them is Lord of the Easts. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:6
إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ
37:6
We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:7
وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ مَّارِدٍ
37:7
and to preserve against every rebel Satan; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:8
لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ
37:8
they listen not to the High Council, for they are pelted from every side, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:9
دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ
37:9
rejected, and theirs is an everlasting chastisement, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:10
إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ ٱلْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ
37:10
except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:11
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍۭ
37:11
So ask them for a pronouncement -- Are they stronger in constitution, or those We created? We created them of clinging clay. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:12
بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ
37:12
Nay, thou marvellest; and they scoff - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:13
وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا يَذْكُرُونَ
37:13
and, when reminded, do not remember - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:14
وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ
37:14
and, when they see a sign, would scoff; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:15
وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
37:15
and they say, 'This is nothing but manifest sorcery. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:16
أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
37:16
What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:17
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ
37:17
What, and our fathers, the ancients?' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:18
قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَٰخِرُونَ
37:18
Say: 'Yes, and in all lowliness.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:19
فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
37:19
For it is only a single scaring, then behold, they are watching - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:20
وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَا هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ
37:20
and they say, 'Woe, alas for us! This is the Day of Doom.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:21
هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
37:21
'This is the Day of Decision, even that you cried lies to. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:22
۞ ٱحْشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ
37:22
Muster those who did evil, their wives, and that they were serving, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:23
مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
37:23
apart from God, and guide them unto the path of Hell! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:24
وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ
37:24
And halt them, to be questioned: - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:25
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ
37:25
"Why help you not one another?" - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:26
بَلْ هُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ
37:26
No indeed; but today they resign themselves in submission - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:27
وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
37:27
and advance one upon another, asking each other questions. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:28
قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
37:28
These say, 'Why, you of old would come to us from the right hand.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:29
قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ
37:29
Those say, 'No; on the contrary, you were not believers; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:30
وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَـٰنٍۭ ۖ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَـٰغِينَ
37:30
we had no authority over you; no, you were an insolent people. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:31
فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَآ ۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ
37:31
So our Lord's Word is realised against us; we are tasting it. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:32
فَأَغْوَيْنَـٰكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِينَ
37:32
Therefore we perverted you, and we ourselves were perverts.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:33
فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ
37:33
So all of them on that day are sharers in the chastisement. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:34
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
37:34
Even so We do with the sinners; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:35
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
37:35
for when it was said to them, 'There is no god but God,' they were ever waxing proud, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:36
وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍۭ
37:36
saying, 'What, shall we forsake our gods for a poet possessed?' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:37
بَلْ جَآءَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
37:37
'No indeed; but he brought the truth, and confirmed the Envoys. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:38
إِنَّكُمْ لَذَآئِقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَلِيمِ
37:38
Now certainly you shall be tasting the painful chastisement, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:39
وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
37:39
and not be recompensed, except according to what you were doing.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:40
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
37:40
Except for God's sincere servants; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:41
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
37:41
for them awaits a known provision, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:42
فَوَٰكِهُ ۖ وَهُم مُّكْرَمُونَ
37:42
fruits -- and they high-honoured - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:43
فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
37:43
in the Gardens of Bliss - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:44
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ
37:44
upon couches, set face to face, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:45
يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍۭ
37:45
a cup from a spring being passed round to them, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:46
بَيْضَآءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ
37:46
white, a delight to the drinkers, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:47
لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ
37:47
wherein no sickness is, neither intoxication; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:48
وَعِندَهُمْ قَـٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ عِينٌ
37:48
and with them wide-eyed maidens restraining their glances - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:49
كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَّكْنُونٌ
37:49
as if they were hidden pearls. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:50
فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
37:50
They advance one upon another, asking each other questions. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:51
قَالَ قَآئِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّى كَانَ لِى قَرِينٌ
37:51
One of them says, 'I had a comrade - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:52
يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَ
37:52
who would say, "Are you a confirmer? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:53
أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ
37:53
What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be requited?" - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:54
قَالَ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ
37:54
He says, 'Are you looking down?' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:55
فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِى سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
37:55
Then he looks, and sees him in the midst of Hell. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:56
قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرْدِينِ
37:56
He says, 'By God, wellnigh thou didst destroy me; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:57
وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ
37:57
But for my Lord's blessing, I were one of the arraigned. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:58
أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ
37:58
What, do we then not die - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:59
إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
37:59
except for our first death, and are we not chastised? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:60
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
37:60
This is indeed the mighty triumph, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:61
لِمِثْلِ هَـٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ ٱلْعَـٰمِلُونَ
37:61
for the like of this let the workers work.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:62
أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ
37:62
Is that better as a hospitality, or the Tree of Ez-Zakkoum? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:63
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَـٰهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
37:63
We have appointed it as a trial for the evildoers. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:64
إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِىٓ أَصْلِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
37:64
It is a tree that comes forth in the root of Hell; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:65
طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ
37:65
its spathes are as the heads of Satans, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:66
فَإِنَّهُمْ لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ
37:66
and they eat of it, and of it fill their bellies, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:67
ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
37:67
then on top of it they have a brew of boiling water, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:68
ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى ٱلْجَحِيمِ
37:68
then their return is unto Hell. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:69
إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ ضَآلِّينَ
37:69
They found their fathers erring, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:70
فَهُمْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ
37:70
and they run in their footsteps. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:71
وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
37:71
Before them erred most of the ancients, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:72
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ
37:72
and We sent among them warners; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:73
فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
37:73
and behold, how was the end of them that were warned, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:74
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
37:74
except for God's sincere servants. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:75
وَلَقَدْ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ ٱلْمُجِيبُونَ
37:75
Noah called to Us; and how excellent were the Answerers! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:76
وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
37:76
And We delivered him and his people from the great distress, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:77
وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ
37:77
and We made his seed the survivors, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:78
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
37:78
and left for him among the later folk - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:79
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٍ فِى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
37:79
'Peace be upon Noah among all beings!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:80
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
37:80
Even so We recompense the good-doers; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:81
إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
37:81
he was among Our believing servants. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:82
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ
37:82
Then afterwards We drowned the rest. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:83
۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ
37:83
Of his party was also Abraham; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:84
إِذْ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
37:84
when he came unto his Lord with a pure heart, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:85
إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ
37:85
when he said to his father and his folk, 'What do you serve? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:86
أَئِفْكًا ءَالِهَةً دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ
37:86
Is it a calumny, gods apart from God, that you desire? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:87
فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
37:87
What think you then of the Lord of all Being?' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:88
فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةً فِى ٱلنُّجُومِ
37:88
And he cast a glance at the stars, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:89
فَقَالَ إِنِّى سَقِيمٌ
37:89
and he said, 'Surely I am sick.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:90
فَتَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ
37:90
But they went away from him, turning their backs. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:91
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ
37:91
Then he turned to their gods, and said, 'What do you eat? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:92
مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنطِقُونَ
37:92
What ails you, that you speak not?' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:93
فَرَاغَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضَرْبًۢا بِٱلْيَمِينِ
37:93
And he turned upon them smiting them with his right hand. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:94
فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يَزِفُّونَ
37:94
Then came the others to him hastening. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:95
قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ
37:95
He said, 'Do you serve what you hew, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:96
وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
37:96
and God created you and what you make?' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:97
قَالُوا۟ ٱبْنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنْيَـٰنًا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِى ٱلْجَحِيمِ
37:97
They said, 'Build him a building, and cast him into the furnace!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:98
فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ
37:98
They desired to outwit him; so We made them the lower ones. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:99
وَقَالَ إِنِّى ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ
37:99
He said, 'I am going to my Lord; He will guide me. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:100
رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
37:100
My Lord, give me one of the righteous.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:101
فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِيمٍ
37:101
Then We gave him the good tidings of a prudent boy; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:102
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعْىَ قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
37:102
and when he had reached the age of running with him, he said, 'My son, I see in a dream that I shall sacrifice thee; consider, what thinkest thou?' He said, 'My father, do as thou art bidden; thou shalt find me, God willing, one of the steadfast.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:103
فَلَمَّآ أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلْجَبِينِ
37:103
When they had surrendered, and he flung him upon his brow, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:104
وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ أَن يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ
37:104
We called unto him, 'Abraham, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:105
قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
37:105
thou hast confirmed the vision; even so We recompense the good-doers. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:106
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْبَلَـٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلْمُبِينُ
37:106
This is indeed the manifest trial.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:107
وَفَدَيْنَـٰهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ
37:107
And We ransomed him with a mighty sacrifice, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:108
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
37:108
and left for him among the later folk - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:109
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
37:109
'Peace be upon Abraham!' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:110
كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
37:110
Even so We recompense the good-doers; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:111
إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
37:111
he was among Our believing servants. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:112
وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِإِسْحَـٰقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ
37:112
Then We gave him the good tidings of Isaac, a Prophet, one of the righteous. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:113
وَبَـٰرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِۦ مُبِينٌ
37:113
And We blessed him, and Isaac; and of their seed some are good-doers, and some manifest self-wrongers. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:114
وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ
37:114

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوْمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
37:115
and We delivered them and their people from the great distress. - A. J. Arberry (English)

وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ
37:116
And We helped them, so that they were the victors; - A. J. Arberry (English)

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمَا ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ٱلْمُسْتَبِينَ
37:117
and We gave them the Manifesting Book, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:118
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
37:118
and guided them in the straight path, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:119
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِمَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
37:119
and left for them among the later folk - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:120
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ
37:120
'Peace be upon Moses and, Aaron!' - A. J. Arberry (English)

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
37:121
Even so We recompense the good-doers; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:122
إِنَّهُمَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
37:122
they were among Our believing servants. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:123
وَإِنَّ إِلْيَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
37:123
Elias too was one of the Envoys; - A. J. Arberry (English)

إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
37:124
when he said to his people, 'Will you not be godfearing? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:125
أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَ
37:125
Do you call on Baal, and abandon the Best of creators? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:126
ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
37:126
God, your Lord, and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients?' - A. J. Arberry (English)

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ
37:127
But they cried him lies; so they will be among the arraigned, - A. J. Arberry (English)

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
37:128
except for God's sincere servants; - A. J. Arberry (English)

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلْ يَاسِينَ

ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

then We destroyed the others, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:137
وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهِم مُّصْبِحِينَ
37:137
and you pass by them in the morning - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:138
وَبِٱلَّيْلِ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
37:138
and in the night; will you not understand? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:139
وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
37:139
Jonah too was one of the Envoys; - A. J. Arberry (English)

إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ
37:140
when he ran away to the laden ship - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:141
فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ
37:141
and cast lots, and was of the rebutted, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:142
فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ
37:142
then the whale swallowed him down, and he blameworthy. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:143
فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ
37:143
Now had he not been of those that glorify God, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:144
لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
37:144
he would have tarried in its belly until the day they shall be raised; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:145
۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ
37:145
but We cast him upon the wilderness, and he was sick, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:146
وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ
37:146
and We caused to grow over him a tree of gourds. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:147
وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ
37:147
Then We sent him unto a hundred thousand, or more, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:148
فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ
37:148
and they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:149
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلْبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلْبَنُونَ
37:149
So ask them for a pronouncement -- Has thy Lord daughters, and they sons? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:150
أَمْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَـٰثًا وَهُمْ شَـٰهِدُونَ
37:150
Or did We create the angels females, while they were witnesses? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:151
أَلَآ إِنَّهُم مِّنْ إِفْكِهِمْ لَيَقُولُونَ
37:151
Is it not of their own calumny that they say, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:152
وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ
37:152
'God has begotten?' They are truly liars. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:153
أَصْطَفَى ٱلْبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلْبَنِينَ
37:153
Has He chosen daughters above sons? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:154
مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ
37:154
What ails you then, how you judge? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:155
أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
37:155
What, and will you not remember? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:156
أَمْ لَكُمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ مُّبِينٌ
37:156
Or have you a clear authority? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:157
فَأْتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
37:157
Bring your Book, if you speak truly! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:158
وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَيْنَهُۥ وَبَيْنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ ٱلْجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ
37:158
They have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn; and the jinn know that they shall be arraigned. - A. J. Arberry (English)

سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ
37:159
Glory be to God above that they describe, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:160
إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
37:160
except for God's sincere servants. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:161
فَإِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ

But as for you, and that you serve, - A. J. Arberry (English)

مَآ أَنتُمْ عَلَيْهِ بِفَـٰتِنِينَ
37:162
you shall not tempt any against Him - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:163
إِلَّا مَنْ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
37:163
except him who shall roast in Hell. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:164
وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
37:164
None of us is there, but has a known station; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:165
وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ
37:165
we are the rangers, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:166
وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلْمُسَبِّحُونَ
37:166
we are they that give glory. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:167
وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَيَقُولُونَ
37:167
What though they would say, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:168
لَوْ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكْرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
37:168
'If only we had had a Reminder from the ancients, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:169
لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
37:169
then were we God's sincere servants.' - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:170
فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
37:170
But they disbelieved in it; soon they shall know! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:171
وَلَقَدْ سَبَقَتْ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
37:171
Already Our Word has preceded to Our servants, the Envoys; - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:172
إِنَّهُمْ لَهُمُ ٱلْمَنصُورُونَ
37:172
assuredly they shall be helped, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:173
وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ
37:173
and Our host -- they are the victors. - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:174
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ
37:174
So turn thou from them for a while, - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:175
وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ
37:175
and see them; soon they shall see! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:176
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
37:176
What, do they seek to hasten Our chastisement? - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:177
فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ
37:177
When it lights in their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of them that are warned! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:178
وَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ
37:178
So turn thou from them for a while, - A. J. Arberry (English)

وَأَبْصِرْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ

and see; soon they shall see! - A. J. Arberry (English)
37:180
سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ
37:180
Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! - A. J. Arberry (English)

وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

and praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being. - A. J. Arberry (English)
