Transliteration
Wahiduddin Khan
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ
56:1
When the Event will come to pass - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:2
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
56:2
– and then there will be no one to deny its occurrence – - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:3
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ
56:3
(a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا
56:4
when the earth will suddenly shake with a terrible shaking, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا
56:5
and the mountains will crumble - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:6
فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا
56:6
and will scatter abroad into fine dust. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:7
وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً
56:7
You shall then become three groups. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:8
فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
56:8
The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:9
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
56:9
And the People on the Left: and how miserable will be the People on the Left! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:10
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ
56:10
As for the Foremost, they will be the foremost! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:11
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
56:11
They shall be near-stationed (to their Lord), - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:12
فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
56:12
in the Gardens of Bliss. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:13
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
56:13
A throng of the ancients, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:14
وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
56:14
and a few from later times. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ
56:15
They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:16
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ
56:16
reclining on them, arrayed face to face; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:17
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ
56:17
immortal youths shall go about them - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:18
بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ
56:18
with goblets and ewers and a cup filled with a drink drawn from a running spring, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:19
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
56:19
a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:20
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
56:20
they will also go about them with the fruits of which they may choose, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:21
وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
56:21
and with the flesh of any fowl that they may desire to eat; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:22
وَحُورٌ عِينٌ
56:22
and there shall be wide-eyed maidens, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:23
كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ
56:23
beautiful as pearls hidden in their shells. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:24
جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
56:24
All this shall be theirs as a reward for their deeds. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:25
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا
56:25
There they shall hear no idle talk nor any sinful speech. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:26
إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا
56:26
All talk will be sound and upright. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:27
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:27
As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:28
فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ
56:28
They shall be in the midst of thornless lote trees, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:29
وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ
56:29
and flower-clad acacias, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:30
وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ
56:30
and extended shade, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:31
وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ
56:31
and gushing water, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:32
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ
56:32
and abundant fruit, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:33
لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ
56:33
never-ending and unforbidden. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:34
وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ
56:34
They shall be on upraised couches, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:35
إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً
56:35
and their spouses We shall have brought them into being afresh, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:36
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا
56:36
and shall have made them virgins, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:37
عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا
56:37
intensely loving and of matching age. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:38
لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:38
All this will be for the People on the Right; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:39
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
56:39
a large throng from the ancients, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:40
وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
56:40
and also a large throng from those of later times. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:41
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ
56:41
As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:42
فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ
56:42
They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:43
وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ
56:43
and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:44
لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
56:44
which will neither be cool nor soothing. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:45
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
56:45
Surely they had lived before in luxury, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:46
وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
56:46
and had persisted in the Great Sin. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:47
وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
56:47
They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:48
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ
56:48
(We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:49
قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
56:49
Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:50
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
56:50
shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:51
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ
56:51
Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:52
لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ
56:52
shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:53
فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ
56:53
filling your bellies with it; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:54
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
56:54
and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:55
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ
56:55
drinking it as thirsty camels do.” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:56
هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ
56:56
Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:57
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
56:57
We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:58
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ
56:58
Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:59
ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ
56:59
Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:60
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
56:60
It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:61
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
56:61
Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:62
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
56:62
You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:63
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ
56:63
Have you considered the seeds you till? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:64
ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ
56:64
Is it you or We Who make them grow? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:65
لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
56:65
If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:66
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
56:66
“We have been penalised; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:67
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
56:67
nay; we have been undone!” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:68
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ
56:68
Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:69
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ
56:69
Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:70
لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
56:70
If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:71
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ
56:71
Did you consider the fire which you kindle? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:72
ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ
56:72
Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:73
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ
56:73
We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:74
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
56:74
Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:75
۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ
56:75
No! I swear by the positions of the stars – - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:76
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
56:76
and this is indeed a mighty oath, if only you knew – - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:77
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ
56:77
that this indeed is a noble Qur'an, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:78
فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ
56:78
inscribed in a well-guarded Book, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:79
لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ
56:79
which none but the pure may touch; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:80
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
56:80
a revelation from the Lord of the Universe. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:81
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
56:81
Do you, then, take this discourse in light esteem, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:82
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
56:82
and your portion in it is simply that you denounce it as false? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:83
فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ
56:83
Why, then, when the soul leaps up to the throat, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:84
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ
56:84
the while you are helplessly watching that he is on the verge of death, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:85
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
56:85
– at that moment when We are closer to him than you, although you do not see (Us) - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:86
فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
56:86
if you are not subject to anyone's authority, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:87
تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
56:87
why are you then not able to bring them back to life if you are truthful? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:88
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
56:88
So if he is one of those who are near-stationed (to Allah), - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:89
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ
56:89
then happiness and delight and Gardens of Bliss are his. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:90
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:90
And if he is one of the People on the Right, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:91
فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:91
he will be welcomed by the words: “Peace to you” from the People on the Right. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:92
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
56:92
And if he is one of those who give the lie (to this Message) and go astray, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:93
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
56:93
then he will be served boiling water, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:94
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
56:94
and will be scorched by the Fire. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:95
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
56:95
That indeed is the absolute truth. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
56:96
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
56:96
So glorify the name of your Great Lord. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
