بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

56:1 إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ
56:1 When the Terror descends - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:2 لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
56:2 (and none denies its descending) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:3 خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ
56:3 abasing, exalting, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:4 إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا
56:4 when the earth shall be rocked - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:5 وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا
56:5 and the mountains crumbled - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:6 فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا
56:6 and become a dust, scattered, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:7 وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً
56:7 and you shall be three bands -- - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:8 فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
56:8 Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:9 وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
56:9 Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:10 وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ
56:10 and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:11 أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
56:11 those are they brought nigh the Throne, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:12 فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
56:12 in the Gardens of Delight - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:13 ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
56:13 (a throng of the ancients - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:14 وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
56:14 and how few of the later folk) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:15 عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ
56:15 upon close-wrought couches - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:16 مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ
56:16 reclining upon them, set face to face, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:17 يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ
56:17 immortal youths going round about them - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:18 بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ
56:18 with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:19 لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
56:19 (no brows throbbing, no intoxication) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:20 وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
56:20 and such fruits as they shall choose, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:21 وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
56:21 and such flesh of fowl as they desire, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:22 وَحُورٌ عِينٌ
56:22 and wide-eyed houris - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:23 كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ
56:23 as the likeness of hidden pearls, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:24 جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
56:24 a recompense for that they laboured. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:25 لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا
56:25 Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:26 إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا
56:26 only the saying 'Peace, Peace!' - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:27 وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:27 The Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:28 فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ
56:28 mid thornless lote-trees - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:29 وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ
56:29 and serried acacias, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:30 وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ
56:30 and spreading shade - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:31 وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ
56:31 and outpoured waters, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:32 وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ
56:32 and fruits abounding - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:33 لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ
56:33 unfailing, unforbidden, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:34 وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ
56:34 and upraised couches. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:35 إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً
56:35 Perfectly We formed them, perfect, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:36 فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا
56:36 and We made them spotless virgins, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:37 عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا
56:37 chastely amorous, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:38 لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:38 like of age for the Companions of the Right. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:39 ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
56:39 A throng of the ancients - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:40 وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
56:40 and a throng of the later folk. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:41 وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ
56:41 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:42 فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ
56:42 mid burning winds and boiling waters - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:43 وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ
56:43 and the shadow of a smoking blaze - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:44 لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
56:44 neither cool, neither goodly; - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:45 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
56:45 and before that they lived at ease, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:46 وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
56:46 and persisted in the Great Sin, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:47 وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
56:47 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:48 أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ
56:48 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:49 قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
56:49 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:50 لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
56:50 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:51 ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ
56:51 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:52 لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ
56:52 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:53 فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ
56:53 and you shall fill therewith your bellies - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:54 فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
56:54 and drink on top of that boiling water - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:55 فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ
56:55 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:56 هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ
56:56 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:57 نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
56:57 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:58 أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ
56:58 Have you considered the seed you spill? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:59 ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ
56:59 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:60 نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
56:60 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:61 عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
56:61 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:62 وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
56:62 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:63 أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ
56:63 Have you considered the soil you till? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:64 ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ
56:64 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:65 لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
56:65 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:66 إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
56:66 'We are debt-loaded; - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:67 بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
56:67 nay, we have been robbed!' - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:68 أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ
56:68 Have you considered the water you drink? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:69 ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ
56:69 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:70 لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
56:70 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:71 أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ
56:71 Have you considered the fire you kindle? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:72 ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ
56:72 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:73 نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ
56:73 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:74 فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
56:74 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:75 ۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ
56:75 No! I swear by the fallings of the stars - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:76 وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
56:76 (and that is indeed a mighty oath, did you but know it) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:77 إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ
56:77 it is surely a noble Koran - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:78 فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ
56:78 in a hidden Book - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:79 لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ
56:79 none but the purified shall touch, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:80 تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
56:80 a sending down from the Lord of all Being. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:81 أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
56:81 What, do you hold this discourse in disdain, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:82 وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
56:82 and do you make it your living to cry lies? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:83 فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ
56:83 Why, but when the soul leaps to the throat of the dying - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:84 وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ
56:84 and that hour you are watching - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:85 وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
56:85 (And We are nigher him than you, but you do not see Us) - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:86 فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
56:86 why, if you are not at Our disposal, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:87 تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
56:87 do you not bring back his soul, if you speak truly? - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:88 فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
56:88 Then, if he be of those brought nigh the Throne, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:89 فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ
56:89 there shall be repose and ease, and a Garden of Delight; - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:90 وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:90 and if he be a Companion of the Right: - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:91 فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
56:91 'Peace be upon thee, Companion of the Right!' - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:92 وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
56:92 But if he be of them that cried lies, and went astray, - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:93 فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
56:93 there shall be a hospitality of boiling water - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:94 وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
56:94 and the roasting in Hell. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:95 إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
56:95 Surely this is the truth of certainty. - A. J. Arberry (English)

56:96 فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
56:96 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. - A. J. Arberry (English)
