بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
53:1
وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
53:1
By the star when it sets: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:2
مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
53:2
your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:3
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
53:3
nor does he speak out of his desire. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:4
إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ
53:4
This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:5
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
53:5
something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:6
ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
53:6
one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:7
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
53:7
being on the higher horizon. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:8
ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
53:8
Then he drew near and hung above suspended, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:9
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
53:9
until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:10
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
53:10
Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:11
مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
53:11
His heart added no untruth to what he saw. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:12
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
53:12
Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:13
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ
53:13
Indeed he saw him a second time, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:14
عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
53:14
by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:15
عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
53:15
near which is the Garden of Abode. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:16
إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
53:16
(This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:17
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
53:17
His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:18
لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ
53:18
and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:19
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ
53:19
Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:20
وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ
53:20
and about the third deity, al-Manat? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:21
أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
53:21
Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:22
تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ
53:22
That is indeed an unfair division! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:23
إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
53:23
These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:24
أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
53:24
Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:25
فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ
53:25
To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:26
۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ
53:26
Numerous are the angels in the heavens; yet their intercession shall be of no avail, except in regard to those whom He grants the leave of intercession and whose plea He is pleased to accept. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:27
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
53:27
Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give angels the names of females, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:28
وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا
53:28
although they have no knowledge regarding that. They only follow their conjecture and conjecture can never take the place of the Truth. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:29
فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا
53:29
So leave alone those who turn away from the remembrance of Us and who seek nothing but the life of the world – - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:30
ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ
53:30
that being the utmost of their knowledge. Surely your Lord fully knows those who have strayed away from His Path and He also fully knows those who are rightly guided. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:31
وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى
53:31
To Allah alone belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. He will requite the evil-doers for their deeds and bestow a goodly reward on those who have done good, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:32
ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ
53:32
on those who avoid grave sins and shameful deeds, even if they may sometimes stumble into lesser offences. Surely your Lord is abounding in His Forgiveness. Very well is He aware of you since He produced you from the earth, and while you were still in your mothers' wombs and not yet born. So do not boastfully claim yourselves to be purified. He fully knows those that are truly Godfearing. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:33
أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ
53:33
(O Prophet), did you see him who turned away (from the Path of Allah), - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:34
وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
53:34
who gave a little, and then stopped? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:35
أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
53:35
Does he have any knowledge of the world beyond the ken of sense-perception, and therefore, clearly sees (the Truth)? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:36
أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
53:36
Has he not been informed of what is in the Scrolls of Moses, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:37
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ
53:37
and of Abraham, who lived up to the trust? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:38
أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
53:38
“That no bearer of a burden shall bear the burden of another, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:39
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
53:39
and that man shall have nothing but what he has striven for, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:40
وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
53:40
and that (the result of) his striving shall soon be seen, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:41
ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ
53:41
and that he shall then be fully recompensed, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:42
وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
53:42
and that the final end is with your Lord, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:43
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ
53:43
and that He it is Who causes people to laugh and to cry, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:44
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا
53:44
and that He it is Who causes death and grants life, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:45
وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ
53:45
and He it is Who created the two kinds, the male and the female, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:46
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
53:46
from a drop of sperm when it was emitted, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:47
وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ
53:47
and that it is for Him to grant the second life, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:48
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ
53:48
that He it is Who bestowed wealth and riches, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:49
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
53:49
that He is the Lord of Sirius, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:50
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ
53:50
that He it is Who destroyed the ancient 'Ad, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:51
وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ
53:51
and Thamud, leaving no trace of them, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:52
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
53:52
and that He it is Who destroyed the people of Noah before for they were much given to iniquity and transgression. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:53
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
53:53
And He brought perdition upon the subverted cities - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:54
فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
53:54
and caused them to be covered with that which He covered them with. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:55
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ
53:55
So, which of your Lord's bounties will you doubt?” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:56
هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ
53:56
This is a warning among the warnings of yore. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:57
أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ
53:57
The imminent Hour has drawn near, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:58
لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
53:58
and none but Allah can avert it. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:59
أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
53:59
Will you, then, wonder at this? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:60
وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
53:60
Will you laugh at it rather than weep? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:61
وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ
53:61
Will you occupy yourselves simply in merriment? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
53:62
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩
53:62
Prostrate yourselves before Allah, and serve Him. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
