بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

74:1 يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ
74:1 O you enveloped in your cloak! - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:2 قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
74:2 Arise, and warn, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:3 وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
74:3 and magnify the glory of your Lord, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:4 وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
74:4 and purify your robes, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:5 وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ
74:5 and shun uncleanness, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:6 وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
74:6 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:7 وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ
74:7 and persevere for your Lord's sake. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:8 فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ
74:8 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:9 فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
74:9 that will surely be a hard day, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:10 عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ
74:10 not an easy day for the unbelievers. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:11 ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا
74:11 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:12 وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
74:12 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:13 وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا
74:13 and sons ever present with him, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:14 وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا
74:14 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:15 ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
74:15 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:16 كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا
74:16 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:17 سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا
74:17 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:18 إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
74:18 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:19 فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
74:19 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:20 ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
74:20 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:21 ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
74:21 He looked (at others); - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:22 ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
74:22 then frowned and scowled; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:23 ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ
74:23 then he retreated and waxed proud, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:24 فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
74:24 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:25 إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ
74:25 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:26 سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
74:26 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:27 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ
74:27 And what do you know what Hell is? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:28 لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ
74:28 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:29 لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ
74:29 it scorches (even) the skin. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:30 عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
74:30 Over it are nineteen keepers. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:31 وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
74:31 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:32 كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ
74:32 Nay, by the moon, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:33 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
74:33 and by the night when it recedes, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:34 وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ
74:34 and by the day when it dawns (with its radiance), - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:35 إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ
74:35 surely (Hell) is one of the greatest Signs, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:36 نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ
74:36 a warning to humankind, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:37 لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
74:37 a warning to everyone of you whether he would like to come forward or lag behind. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:38 كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
74:38 Each one is a hostage to one's deeds, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:39 إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ
74:39 save the People of the Right Hand - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:40 فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ
74:40 who shall be in the Gardens, and shall ask - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:41 عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
74:41 about the guilty ones: - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:42 مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ
74:42 “What drove you to Hell?” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:43 قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ
74:43 They will answer: “We were not among those who observed Prayer, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:44 وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ
74:44 and we did not feed the poor, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:45 وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ
74:45 and we indulged in vain talk with those who indulged in vain talk, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:46 وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
74:46 and we gave the lie to the Day of Judgement - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:47 حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ
74:47 until the inevitable event overtook us.” - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:48 فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ
74:48 The intercession of the intercessors shall then be of no avail to them. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:49 فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
74:49 What is the matter with people that they are turning away from this Exhortation, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:50 كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
74:50 as though they were frightened wild asses, - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:51 فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ
74:51 fleeing from a lion? - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:52 بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
74:52 No indeed; each one of them desires that open letters be sent to each of them. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:53 كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ
74:53 No indeed; the truth is that they have no fear of the Hereafter. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:54 كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ
74:54 Nay; this is an Exhortation. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:55 فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
74:55 So, whoever wills may benefit from it. - Abul Ala Maududi (English)

74:56 وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ
74:56 But they will not benefit from it unless Allah Himself so wills. He is worthy to be feared; and He is worthy to forgive (those that fear Him). - Abul Ala Maududi (English)
